Article 646 of the Swiss Civil Code reads in an unofficial English translation as follows:
"C. United Ownership
I. Co-ownership
1) Rights of owners inter se
Art. 646
1) Where a certain thing is in the ownership of several persons, each of whom owns a share of it and yet it is outwardly undivided, they are held to be co-owners;
2) In the absence of a contrary arrangement all are held to have equal shares.
3) In respect to his share each co-owner has the rights and is under the obligations of an owner; hecan alienate or pledge it and it can be seized by his creditors for debt.
