Small farms with less than 10 ha farmland and less than 200 feed stock units are not suitable for operating a conventional biogas plant with an electrical capacity of several 100 kW. Their farmland does not provide enough space for sufficient substrate yields and it is not recommendable to operate a plant that is based on substrate that has to be purchased. The small manure biogas plant PORTAFERM enables these small farmers to economically convert their manure into electricity and heat. The 2nd amended renewable energy law EEG (Germany) that went into effect 2009 introduced a manure bonus, which is intended to support the smaller biogas plants (<150kW) with high percentages of manure. The operation of a small biogas plant becomes more economically interesting if the heat that is produced by the conversion of the biogas to electricity (combined heat and power production) can be used outside the biogas plant. There is an extra bonus for the produced and externally used heat (kWh according to the heat meter) of 3 cent per kWh. The calculation is based on the multiplication of the externally used heat by the so-called electricity factor, the ratio of electrical to thermal capacity of the combined heat and power unit. |
