Subject: OFF - Цена перевода на русский A friend asked to inquire into how much it might cost to translate a book, app. 60,000 words, from English to Russian. It's an academic text discussing Russian literature. This is not a dissertation. (Most likely a study of Dostoevsky, but I'm not sure). How much, ballpark, would this be and how long will it require? Thanks |
one word one Russian ruble. |
.. God, как я люблю русскую литературу! ... и куда же можно отправить резюме? |
Бейбарыс Вы шутите, демпингуете или это я дурак?! |
Сергей, Бейбарыс дал весьма оптимистичную оценку. Рубль слово это примерно 250-270 р за станд. стр. За книги нонче редко платят больше 150 |
kondorsky т.е. и рубля за слово не дают! PS |
Is this the price for academic texts? Is a standard page 1600 characters? |
kath I think it's for 1800 characters |
okay, 1800 characters with spaces = approx 325 words. unless my math is off, at 150 roubles a page, that's less than half rouble (50 copecks) per word? could this be right? seems below normal rates. are you sure?!!! |
Kath, it all depends on your luck :-)). Maybe your customer is rich and generous. I'm only saying that average (open market) rate for this sort of work is currently (in Moscow) around 150 rub per 1800 characters with spaces. |
kath I was astonished too, but market is market =) |
kath what rates do you consider normal, if it is not a business secret? |
kath I think it would be interested for you - statistic says that russian word has on average 7-8 characters. |
Well, the standard lower end of the market in the UK from Russian to English is around GBP 120/1000 words. In the US is less, more like between USD 120 and 150/1000 words. For large volume work like a book, a discount can be negotiated. For extremely complex or urgent text, price goes up, etc... I also know that an in-house translator at Western law firms (will not mention names) in Moscow makes between USD3000 and 5000/month plus benefits. This is why I am shocked by what you say about market prices into Russian. |
Lazar' - then what is the standard word/character Russian language page? And yes, my calculations were based on English text. :) |
|

быстро, дешево, качественно... выберите любые два пункта )) |
kath ok, then I have to specify: I was astonished too, but Russian market is Russian market |
kath could you wait, please? |
okay, i'll be back tomorrow :) |

kath, google up two or three Russian translation agencies and ask them. Don't ask here unless you want to hire a member for the job. Most people here won't have a clue - some figures provided are not for academic but for belles-lettres... |
В кои-то веки на форуме появился прямой заказчик. И...что мы читаем про ставки? Ну хотя бы ставки бюро переводов указали бы. |
It's not for me, it's for an academic friend who asked about rates and I only know about English translation. I'm not sure what she wants to do, but I don't see why she couldn't hire someone on here (I'll give her the link). I've encountered some very savvy translators on this forum :) |
kath, "I'll give her the link" DON'T. Bad idea. |
|
link 14.01.2011 7:50 |
kath, most guys here won't even bother for less than 12-15 cents per word )) Some would charge more... or much more... ))) |
kath on average Russian language page (left field - 2 sm, right field - 1 sm, top field - 2 sm, bottom field - 2 sm) has 480 - 520 words (Times New Roman, 12) and 370 - 400 words (Times New Roman, 14) |
Лазарь, когда переводчики говорят о страницах, они (в основном) имеют в виду стандартную расчетную страницу в 1800 знаков, а не меряют линейкой поля, соответственно, one page means about 220-230 words |
segu а-а-а...ну, я вообще-то отвечал на вопрос kath - "Lazar' - then what is the standard word/character Russian language page?" Вы же понимаете, что сейчас страницы не машинописные, а "компьюетрописные", и наполняемость страницы зависит от размера полей и шрифта. |
Лазарь, именно поэтому речь идет всегда об "учетных" страницах, как Вам указали выше. |
Tante B ОК, ОК не смею спорить, я не переводчик |
kath, 20 $ / 1800 characters It seems to me that the customer is rich =) Лазарь |
france3 Я юрист, который работает с англоязычными контрактами. Да и вообще, самостоятельно совершенствую свой слабенький английский. |
60 000 words multiplied by 0.08 $ per source word = 4800 $ |

Hello, I'm insteresd in translating. can send my c/v letter specifying translated books. My speciality (according to diploma) is philologist-germanist (Moscow State University) my mail: vicbright@yandex.ru price 7USD per 1800 |

vicbright, в каком году закончили филфак, если не секрет? |
Я бы тоже за такое взялась, но, конечно, не за 7 долларов...:) На такую работу потребуется месяц-полтора точно... |

///My speciality (according to diploma) is philologist-germanist (Moscow State University)/// Английский был вторым языком? Или самостоятельно изучали? |
не демпингуйте, работайте, как Лебедев: Quite a While. At a Price. Fuckin' Great. :) |
"Well, the standard lower end of the market in the UK from Russian to English is around GBP 120/1000 words." I don't believe that's the low end, or at least not for general translations. It could be low end for technical/medical/financial/legal. |
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think I get it. It's the same as anywhere else - there's always someone who'll do it for whatever price and usually it'll be reflected in quality. I'll pass this thread on to my friend and let her take action as she sees fit. FYI - academics in the US make very little money, unless they're tenured. She is not. I really don't thank that Russian Literature has ever made anyone rich :)) |
"I really don't thank that Russian Literature has ever made anyone rich" Isn't that the sad truth? |

"I really don't think that Russian Literature has ever made anyone rich" ! |
> academics in the US make very little money, unless they're tenured Let's don't start comparing, shall we? |
а на деньги начинает смотреть если не с презрением, то, как минимум, равнодушно - sadly, not true. everyone at some point starts to realize that you need money to live. since i've been closely involved with dovlatov's work recently, i can say with certainty that lack of money was a major concern and the last years of his life he concentrated more on making money, which devastated him because he had little time to write. sad truth. Let's don't start comparing, shall we? - who's complaining? i'm not an academic so no skin off my back. |

///lack of money was a major concern and the last years of his life he (Dovlatov) concentrated more on making money/// Так это же совсем другое дело. |
to Kath: it's "comparing", not "complaining")) |
kath, complaining is perfectly Ok with us Russians because it's a sign of True Spirituality here... good half of Russian literature is complaining with gusts up to whining... ))) what I was trying to say though is that what is "very little money" in the US is a fortune for some here in Russia... but it's an old, long and useless discussion so it's best not to get into it... |

В России должно быть минимум 10 $ за 1800 знаков |
