As pretentious as it might sound |

Corporate style is company’s image in development, but somebody fears this definition sounds bombastic.

в общем, SirReal +1 но много вариантов - с разными оттенками, и в зависимости от того, где оно будет в предложении: pretentious as it may/might sound |
no matter how loud these words might sound |

As buzzword-like as it sounds, "corporate styling" refers to putting a unique, recognizable face on your business.. |
its face is imageless) |
...(неосторожно) should its face were interfaced, then its image would have been damaged) |
|
link 22.07.2010 20:26 |
это и правда неосторожно ;) should its face were interfaced, then its image would have been damaged -> A. should its face get/become interfaced, its image will be damaged B. if its face were interfaced, its image would be damaged C. (doubtful) if its face were interfaced, its image would have been damaged D. ??? which one? |
Спасибо, ilya.buchkin!

(anatomy) The front part of the head, featuring the eyes, nose, and mouth and the surrounding area. 2. One's facial expression. 3. The public image; outward appearance.

+high(hi)falutin(g) +assuming +presumptuous +boastful +pompous depending on overall style. |

Actually... I think that 123 has a point here... "The face of this company" may refer to a person representing the company or its products, a spokesperson. Any visual material that the company uses would be a "symbol" or.. image :) |

Not necesssarily, if at all.. See my quote from Wiktionary above.. |
I saw the quote... I still say it's a human being ) |

lisulya brings a good point there: even though the "face" is considered a valid term for the purpose, it can be easier (than "image") misunderstood or confused (with a "person representing company") by the audience. for that reason, i would definitely prefer "image" in my texts - less ambiguous. |

I would say that the ambiguity you are talking about is a figment of your imagination, a phanthom, as I clearly demonstrated by the quote above and as you would have in no time found out for yourself if you'd bothered to google it first.. |

@Oscar Milde: http://www.google.com/search?q="face+of+the+company" fair search? .... first page of results: 1. Professional Reception Skills - The Face of the Company. .... 2. Customer Service – The Face of the Company- ... 3. CEO is the Face of the Companydeepak.chowdary@...... 4. Working Less When You're the Face of the Company 5. Randy Orton could be the Face of the company instead of Cena. He cares... 6. Kournikova, once the face of K-Swiss marketing, now out of the mix 7. Without John Cena, Who Would Be The Face Of The Company?... 8. Terry Bradshaw becomes face of local RV company... 9. The changing face of the company man - The Boston Globe ... 10. Sure people hated Hogan, HBK, Hart, The Rock, Austin when they were the face of the company, but you did not hear so out of 10: 8 are people, and 2 are sub-departments (Professional Reception Skills, Customer Service). NO results on first page for the meaning discussed in the thread.... OUCH! I did search for "company image" and "image of the company" - not all, but MOST of the results match the meaning discussed here. last question: did YOU do the search you suggested? or was it just a bluff? |
I am with the no face camp. Gordon Jump was the face of Maytag..., not the logo. |

Great, now you are putting words in my mouth.. Correct me if I am wrong, but was it not the phrase “putting a face on a company” that we were discussing here (and I asked you to google)? When did it become “face of the company”? And the question was: does the phrase “putting a face on a company” carry so much as a slight implication of a human face? Is there a hard-and-fast rule that a face so put may only be some celebrity who endorses that company’s products or some other human being? I think the answer to these questions is a big, fat “no” – courtesy of a device known as figurative speech, which I thought was rather obvious.. Like I said, you owe it to yourself to get your blinkers off, google the phrase and find out in no time that it is used the world over in the sense of “developing a company image”, with specific references to the non-humanity of what is to be developed.. Better still, there is even no ambiguity with “face of the company” as a possible reference to the company’s image – and Wiktionary, to name just one authority, says as much.. Try explaining that away.. |
"putting a face on a company" makes about as much sense as "putting a vagina on a company" IMHO |

That's because you are in denial.. |

Oscar, show me who discussed this particular phrase: “putting a face on a company”? It never even appeared like this in this thread (yeah, it *could be* extracted from your initial post - but so could be a lot of other things from other places). Apart from that first post of yours, everybody else has been arguing whether use of "face" with "company" makes sense, and what is the difference between "face" and "image" in that context. Read it - everybody's posts, not just your own mind which nobody else has access to. |
|

It (""face" with "company"", as you put it) does make sense, otherwise it wouldn't have made it to Wiktionary (and God knows how many other reference works and, last but not least, conventional usage).. I find your studious hiding from this fact quite telling.. |
Oscar, thank you very much for your explanation of your point of view. If I've understood you correctly, "face of the Company" is not a correct example of the British English, is it? |
|
link 23.07.2010 12:55 |
Oscar, You are making things up. Check it again - I never said that "face" does not make sense, I only said it is more ambiguous than the "image", and for that reason I would prefer the latter - and that was ALL that I said, wasn't it? Also, your particular wording - "to put a face on a company" - is quite clear, and it never caused any doubts on my part as to what it means.... it's just that the argument (as I perceived it, and still do) was on a different, BROADER topic. |
I don't like "face" and "company" in the same sentence that does not describe a person ("face of") representing a "company"... end of |
Wow! I didn't expect there would be so many discussions after my leaving forum! Of course "image" not "face"! "Face" would be a literal translation! |
Company's identity |
