Subject: кума gen. I am trying to translate a caption to a satirical postcard on the First Duma. The Russian original is: “Дума кума, не лиши нас ума” In order to get a sense of the rhyme/wordplay I have come up with: “Dearest Duma/Thought, please don’t befuddle, and leave our minds a muddle” However, I am not sure that I fully understand the sense of the word кума here. Can anyone help? Many thanks. |
кума здесь для рифмы сенс не играет влияния |
Douma, my lady Don't make them all crazy to make crazy - сводить с ума - несколько значений, в т.ч. и потерять голову от избытка чувств, влюбленности |
There is a dictionary here on Multitran. In this dictionary, 'kuma' means: 1. godmother of a child as related to the child's mother; mother of a child as related to the child's godmother; so in a relationship between the mother and the godmother of a child both women are 'kuma' to each other. 2. my good woman (as mode of address to an elderly woman) |
я ж вот стопудово помню, что уже отвечала на этот вопрос. судя по всему, вам же:) http://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?a=4&MessNum=305227&l1=1&l2=2 |
"кума" - одно из любимых слов в русской поэзии. "кумушка" тоже. что-то в нем есть такое... здесь оно употреблено просто для эффекта фонетического созвучия. ассонанс и аллитерация. а перевод зависит только от смысла этой картинки. |

Thought — no way Come to think of it, the word "кума" is usually used in Russian folklore tales as a synonym of fox, implying its cunningness. Dunno, maybe something like State Duma, State Duma, Cure Russian Brain Tumor will do the trick. |
ага, и за это время (2013 - 2017) Тоби стал Тобиком -:)) |
Yes, it's one and the same me, I just haven't yet found a translation that I'm happy with, so thought I'd try a second round! Many thanks for the suggestions. |
