может она просто захочет бегло взглянуть на внучат, тогда at, только грамматику следует поменять.

'looking for' = 'searching for'. Have you lost them?!?

'looking after' = 'caring for'.

If you mean 'visiting them/spending some time with them', just say 'seeing them', not 'looking at them'.

It is an exercise in an Oxford book. Thanks for comment.

Да ну? Прям в оксфордском учебнике так и написано?
I'm looking (at or for) my grandchildren next week.
Оксфорд уже не тот...

Oxford United football club? If not, Oxford University Press's standards have certainly dropped!

Why?
Is it possible, they have one correct answer to the question and three incorrect, and asker just picked the wrong one?

 johnstephenson

link 25.02.2017 19:56
It could be that there were other предлоги available (such as 'after') which the asker has failed to show us. Only the asker knows the answer to that, though.

grammatically speaking, either of the two is possible.
whether it has to make sense is another issue altogether.
it's not entirely impossible that there may be a situation (in a movie, for instance) when someone "is looking at his/her cat next week'.

Of course, grammatically speaking you can put almost any preposition there -- 'I'm looking (under/through/inside/from/above/outside) my grandchildren next week', just as you can say 'there's an elephant in my coffee' -- but you'd almost never say any of them, as they don't make sense. 'after' makes perfect sense, though.

'looking for' could make sense -- but only if (for some reason) you know you're going to be searching for them, and 'looking at' could -- but only if you're going to be considering/investigating/inspecting them for some reason, or looking at pictures/paintings of them. These two are both very unlikely, though.

Bingo! -- "Well done, Holmes!" So the original's been copied and distorted at some point, with someone inserting "(at or for)" where the blank space should be.
