Strictly = popular name for Strictly Come Dancing, a long-running BBC TV series in which amateur dancers compete against each other. Balls here = Ed Balls, former Labour party Treasury minister who, a few years ago, took part in this programme/competition. 'lost himself in ......' here = 'was very engrossed in and greatly enjoying ......' *** monkey-faced - гримасничающие или с обезьяньими физиономиями? *** It could be either, but here he probably means 'with their faces painted (or wearing masks) to make them look like monkeys' -- as part of the show they were performing in. 'the distinct dearth of damns he gave about ......' = 'the fact that he didn't give a damn about ......' ('not to give a damn about x (eg, s.o. opinions/feelings)' = 'not to care at all about x'/'not to be at all concerned about x', as in: The para beginning 'Much of the ......' isn't written in standard English; it's written in a deliberately complex, convoluted style, designed to impress the reader with the author's use of English as much as to describe what's happening. |

.... and, "strictly" speaking, the author's left out a comma and a couple of hyphens. It should read: 'a gadabout, [adj.] Charleston-dancing, gingham-shirt-clad farmhand. -- if that helps. And this (if you haven't seen it) is the dance by Balls that the author's referring to: |
