gen. military medical examination (Military Medical Examination in the USSR, a medical examination that is performed in order to evaluate fitness for military service in the various branches of the armed forces and to determine the need for special treatment, sick leave, or discharge. Military medical examinations are given by permanent military medical commissions of the military commissariats. The commissions, which consist of no fewer than three physicians, are guided in their work chiefly by the List of Diseases and Physical Handicaps, issued by a special order of the minister of defense of the USSR and prepared in accordance with the nomenclature and classification of diseases accepted by the Soviet Army and Navy. Local medical commissions are guided and supervised by the district medical commissions of the various branches of the armed forces. The highest agency responsible for military medical examinations is the Central Military Medical Commission of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR.
