mil., logist. A land forces operational reconnaissance or march protection unit. A security and reconnaissance patrol is detached from subunits and units when they are on the march or in action, to collect intelligence about the enemy, the terrain, the nuclear or the chemical situation, or to warn the troops they protect of the enemy's presence or an attack.
