The collection, examination and analysis of data on the extent and degree of radioactive contamination and pollution of terrain, water, the atmosphere, military equipment, other equipment and installations. Radiological reconnaissance involves establishing that contamination or pollution has occurred, defining the limits of contaminated areas, determining the extent of contamination, the number of contaminated personnel and the amount of contaminated equipment and materiel. It is carried out by reconnaissance subunits of the nuclear, biological and chemical protection troops, by air crews, by unmanned aerial vehicles, by specially-trained detachments or teams of troops of any arm or branch and by specialized support troops. They are equipped with dosimeters and other radiation monitoring equipment. (UKR/NATO) |
