102. The LDV sector is currently dependent on one technology platform, the internal combustion engine. It is an inherently inefficient platform in terms of the fraction of energy consumed actually moving the vehicle and its load. Current gasoline vehicles with automatic transmission can have a well-to-wheel efficiency of less than 15 per cent. Significantly reducing emissions intensity will rely on developing alternative propulsion systems and/or dramatically increasing the use of lower carbon fuels. There is a wide range of possible pathways to reduced emissions. Intensities range from 250gCO2/km for an internal combustion engine fuelled by liquid hydrogen reformed from natural gas to zero emissions for a fuel cell using compressed gaseous hydrogen derived from water by using electricity which has been produced using renewable energy. 102.
