In brief: Once you taste your first **pupusa**, you'll wonder why you waited so long. These El Salvadoran treats are flat patties of moist masa (corn meal) enclosing a layer of cheese or meat. They are cooked on a griddle until crisp and golden outside and hot and gooey inside and served with curtido, a spicy cabbage slaw. Pupusas don't fit in a low-carb or low-fat diet, but they sure are tasty. Other specialties include big Salvadoran tamales wrapped in banana leaf.

This aptly named restaurant is an Oasis in the Atlantic Square shopping center in Monterey Park. The salvadoran pupusas with platanos fritos, crema, frijoles and curtido (pickled shredded cabagge and carrots) are unparalleled on this side of town.
You can order at the counter and wait for your server to bring your meal at your booth while you admire the artwork and decor. There are a variety of fillings for your pupusa including loroco which is the squash plant flower.
