Случайно наткнулся на Ваш вопрос и нашел статью по soccer mom: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soccer_mom Я думаю, что нет общепринятого перевода для этого термина и тут уже каждый во что горазд переводит. Я бы перевел его, согласно упомянутой статье, как "золотая мама". Звучит, пожалуй, не очень оригинально, но отражает созвучие с золотой молодежью и вкладываемый в этот термин смысл - сэт фрэйзес надо переводить не дословно, а согласно вкладываемому в них смыслу. |
| Soccer mom - "футбольная мамочка" - это не "золотая мама", никакого созвучия с "золотой молодежью". Их типичные маршруты - дом-супермаркет, дом-школа, дом-местное футбольное поле. Водят они ужасно, и сами на этих больших машинах изрядно хамят. |
| soccer moms are not rich. they are just really good moms who do the mom thing. they dont work but that does not mean that they have rich husbands. they take care of the kids but they dont just sit at home - they take them to arts and crafts classes, to the stores when they need to, to and from this and that event, to soccer games (in which the children play and hence the name soccer mom) and generally sign their children up for all kinds of activities which are supposed to help their development as human beings. these moms are Super Moms in other terms. they dont have to be rich. even a low-middle class mom can be a soccer mom. |

actually, among children soccer is a very popular game in the US. it think it is easier for them to comprehend and not such a rough sport as football so moms like it. I played on a soccer team when I was 10. I loved it. I think the reason it becomes so unpopular later is because of tradition. most highshcools have a football team. many dont have a soccer team. also, most have a baseball team and a lacrosse team. these are all games which are considered traditional american sports (which i suppose those who make school cirriculums see as very important). my school had a soccer team but no one really cared unless, like me, they were a soccer fan:) |

В России, как ни забавно, похожая ситуация. Летом, куда ни глянь, везде мальчишки играют в футбол, как в какой-то Бразилии. Кажется, прямо нация футбольных чемпионов. И куда потом деваются эти чемпионы? И где находится при этом российский футбол? Мы все знаем короткий и исчерпывающий ответ на этот вопрос. Можно без особенного риска ставить все свое состояние на то, что футбол и легковой автопром в России еще многие десятилетия будут иметь чисто символическое значение. :-) |
| Слава, дело не в чемпионстве. Футбол у нас - очень популярная и всем известная игра. Именно поэтому, Вы и миллионы наших соотечественников так переживают за наши неуспехи на ЧМ. Другое дела - США. Полагаю, многие американцы имеют весьма смутное представление о том что такое футбол (в смысле soccer). Примерно, как мы о бейсболе, крикете или лакроссе. Поэтому у меня и вызвало удивление то, что добропорядочных мамаш в Америке назвали soccer moms. |

kondorsky, actually soccer is taught in all schools even if they dont have a team and it is well-known by most (i would say upper class, middle class and lower middle class) people. I think it loses popularity becasue of the glory stories surrounding football champs and football dads (who played football before soccer became popular). and actually, fewer people in the us understand lacrosse... many dont even know what it is or they have a smytnoe spominanie that they had to play something with nets on sticks in shcool once. |

Actually, soccer is THE Most Popular Sport played by preschoolers and elementary school children in North America. Unlike hockey it does not require superior skating abilities and expensive equipment; unlike baseball, it does not need good hand-eye coordination, and unlike football, it is not violent. It is simple to understand and safe to play for children as young as 4 years old. It almost is a rite of passage for preschoolers to be enrolled in a local community soccer program: you can see hundreds of them each spring on school fields chasing the ball like swarms of honey bees :-) Even for older children, it is viewed as a good developmental activity: a lot of kids who play hockey in winter switch to soccer in summer to keep up their fitness level. When I come to think of it, I don’t know anybody who did not play soccer at some point in life. Soccer Mom |
