Other components are the slot liners that are used in the stator laminations to protect the wire from chafing. Also, top sticks are used to hold the wire down in place inside the stator slots.

"TOP STICKS," THE OLD-TIMERS CALLED THEM -and with reason. They are located in the top of every slot in the stator or rotor winding of motors and generators. For many years they were indeed "sticks"-lengths of wood, generally hard maple. More widely accepted in the electrical industry today, however, is the term wedge, based on the item's unique function: wedging the coils tightly in the slot to prevent destructive vibration
