Subject: Non-action verbs Understanding English Grammar by B.S. Azar gives a list of verbs which are generally considered non-action but sometimes they can have both stative and progressive meanings.Could possibly give me some examples when the verbs " imagine, doubt, want, mean, cost, include, remember" are used in the progressive tense? Thanks! |

Пож-ста, в интернете все есть: ХХХ has been meaning to develop a yearly newsletter for quite awhile, but, like a lot of things, we never seemed to have time to follow through. |

He said his next film will be an adaptation of a Japanese novel, The Silence, a film, he noted, that he had been wanting to make for 15 years. |

When I was writing it, I was remembering how hard it was to be a 16-year-old in high school. |

The only thing that he believed he could be certain of was that he was doubting, leading to his famous phrase "Cogito ergo sum." |

"I was doubting," he answered -- "I was doubting between Yes and No." ну и так далее |

Thnks a lot BUT: I reckon I should have put my question differently, sorry. What I need to know is the difference in meaning.. I was doubting between Yes and No. Why not say I doubted? I was remembering... What's the meaning of this " action" verb here? He noted that he had been "wanting" Why progressve here? Just to make an emphasis on how strong his wish was? |

The same meaning as any other verb would have in a progressive tense. Look at "When I was writing it, I was remebering" -- a continuous action in the first phrase, and the same tense to match it in the second. In the yes or no instance, he was doubting at that point. He might have been doubting some time before and made up his mind later. Therefore, a simple tense would be inadequate as it would perpetuate his doubts. On the other hand, the Descartes example is less clear. In my opinion, it is possible to express the same idea without a progressive tense: "he was in doubt". |
они будут переводится по-разному. doubting в примере Анатолия Д - это скорее "колебался", чем сомневалсяь глагол remember имеет два основных значения: помнить и "предаваться воспоминаниям", пытаться вспомнить. первое значение - simple, второе - continuous. что до want - встречала только в perfect continuous формах еще например |

у меня два примера с doubting -- Декарт сомневался, а другой персонаж колебался. |
