Subject: She defines herself by her associations with other people; John - by some mysterious concoction whose ingredients Helen hasn't yet figured out, but which consists mainly of her name.
Having a best friend sets her apart from John, who has no friends at all. He has acquaintances: people he eats meals with, studies with, sleeps in the dormitory - but she knows that John's secrets and idle wishes have no ears to spill into. What confuses her is that John doesn't seem to mind.

"Aren't you lonely?"

"Lonely? Why would I be lonely?"

She defines herself by her associations with other people; John - by some mysterious concoction whose ingredients Helen hasn't yet figured out, but which consists mainly of her name.

Что имеетcz в виду под some mysterious concoction whose ingredients Helen hasn't yet figured out, but which consists mainly of her name?
