you dont need context here really. (at least i dont think so)
the sentence stands alone.

His daughter was born.

Спасибо. А контекста особого нет. Просто как информация

 Levitan

True. Even if we say 'girfiend', it is not going to be necessarily true because the mother of his child can be a complete stranger

This is one of the difficult points of translating. There's no natural way to say this in English without specifying that it was his wife/ girlfriend/ mistress/ etc. who had the baby.

My advice is to try and rework the text to avoid this awkward problem.

I beg to differ on this one.
One thing I cannot be sure of for obvious reasons is whether
it is normally spoken.
But whatever the truth is your version: **His daughter was born**
does not seem to describe it.

His daughter was born. - Can be used if the daughter has been previously mentioned.
But if "daughter" is a piece of news, you have to introduce a new idea. IMHO, a daughter was born to him is OK.

In spoken language, you could say "He just had a daughter this morning," meaning the his wife just gave birth to his daughter.

 Shumov

link 24.08.2006 18:34
His daughter was born on a fine April morn...))

Вместо полечки:

There was an old Maid of Cape Horn,
Who went to the zoo every morn
To do there her knitting
And, weather permitting,
To watch hard core animal porn.
