Removal of the coke layer or decomposition of the adsorbed species can recover the activity. This removal of the coke layer can be accomplished via a controlled ex-situ regeneration, thus providing benefits such as decreased shut down time, safer operation and increased recovered catalyst activity and life due to better control of regeneration conditions. All catalyst service plants also have the capability to remove volatile hydrocarbons or water in an inert gas strip for improved temperature control during regeneration in oxygen. This eliminates unwanted side-effects on the catalyst substrate and metals from high flame temperatures or water.
