Once the necessary dispersion quality and the means of measuring it are established, the method of producing the required dispersion quality can be considered. This requires a basic understanding of the mechanics by which dispersion takes place. Regardless of the process or conditions used or the quality desired, dispersion requires three elements to take place: • Initialwetting-forming a suitable pigment/polymer mix • Size reduction-fracturing pigment aggregates and agglomerates • Intimate wetting-displacing air from the pigment surface These elements are discussed in terms of the three basic dispersion processes used in the plastics industry: • Dry blending • Melt shear • Liquid systems |
