Washballs are made by mixing finely grated or powdered soap with other ingredients, usually chosen for their scent or for their cleansing or exfoliating properties. Typically sold as a round ball, they probably originated during the late medieval period and are well documented from the Tudor period onwards, by which time they often included a dazzling range of exotic aromatics.
