With the exception of less than 20 pig farms, on-farm pig population does not exceed 50000, and at the same time the largest Russian pig farms are far removed from each other geographically.

less than 20 swine farms have herds exceeding 50.000, whereby the major swine breeding farms in Russia are characterized by remoteness from each other.

Please note - you never say "population" when related to animal husbandry.

watchkeeper,

Did you read the article carefully? Or did you just see "nonstandard"? "We had less apples" is not acceptable, for sure. But "no less than 50 people attended" absolutely is.

sorry - you are right, I have googled "pig population". Apparently you can say it f.ex when speaking about livestock in the country as a whole. I am interpreting a lot of agri-meetings and NEVER heard "population" but only "herd". But... meetings are never related to the "population" of lifestock in my country as a whole, only related to specific farms.
Sorry again, can only reming myself "never say never"

it was not the only article I read on the subject :-)))

"Standard English still usually requires this basic pattern: use less with mass nouns and fewer with plural count nouns, as in less employment, fewer jobs. But Common English—and even some Standard—increasingly uses less with plurals, especially after than. Edited English still follows the basic pattern rigorously , however, except in a few idiomatic locutions, as in in ten words or less; in certain phrases involving money, such as less than a thousand dollars; and in some phrases involving plural measures of time and distance or other measures, also with than (less than four days, less than ten miles, less than five cups of coffee). Even in these, Edited English prefers fewer, and for many conservatives, the use of less where fewer is expected remains a strong shibboleth.

Fair enough. Now, would you still categorically say "you never use 'less' when related to count nouns"?

Believe it or not, I complain to the cashier at my grocery store every time I have to go through the check-out counter under the sign “12 items or less” :-))))))))))))))))

Besides, in writing “Please note - you never use "less" when related to count nouns”, I was only pulling hi’s leg, trying to mimic his/her ” Please note - you never say "population" when related to animal husbandry”
