| В данном случае действительно нужен контекст. А правило простое: если просто было произведено 20 тонн, то WERE produced. А если типа "партия" там или очередная норма в 20 тонн, то WAS: (another) 20 tons was produced. Надо ориентироваться на слово в скобках (another): если оно подходит по смыслу, пишите ед. число. |

| V, при всем уважении, у меня грамматика никогда не хромала :-). Может быть, здесь и was, но контекст все-таки нужен, имхо. |
