it would mean that you actually lost a face - in reality - not just pride and dignity.
when we talk about pride and dignity in english we use "face" as a metaphor (the face you put forward to the public)
but otherwise (the way you said it) it really is a literal face with skin and all that --- funny to think of country's as having representatives who can actually have their face cut off or something.

если вспомнить исходное выражение, "я мзду не беру, мне за державу обидно" то скорее дословно надо его переводить как "блюду интересы государства".

Нюанс "держава" - не просто страна или гос-во. Поэтический вариант Йист может быть слегка подправлен "My heart bleeds for the Empire (Power).."

Хотя, конечно, все это будет "рашен-инглиш".
