я бы поняла так, что неспециалисты вместо критики по делу (т.е. лингвистических тезисов) критикуют интерьер кабинета/квартиры - это и здесь на форуме бывает

Linguists have an especially hard time defining their field and keeping less-than-informed observers at bay. Physicists from Sir Isaac Newton to Niels Bohr have presumed to blame language itself (not just English) for being inadequate to convey the realities of physics. Not many readers ha ve challenged e ith er Newton's or Bohr's right to speak about linguistics even though it was neither person's specialty. After all, they spoke languages, didn't they? Linguists are rather us ed to having nonspecialist visitors criticizing the drapes and the furniture [драпировка и меблировка].

I lived in New Zealand once and I agree with some things said here about living in a foreign country.

1) They speak English but the country is surprisingly different.

2) They do things differently but it works.

3) The food is a little off from what we are used to (different seasonings perhaps.)

I disagree on the political advice.

1) I never criticized New Zealand. I was a guest and a guest doesn't criticize the furniture.

2) Don't criticize your own country. Don't wash our dirty linen in public. If asked, I would explain things about the US. Sometimes I would give my position and the case for the opposition.
