Три года, но сойдет за 56-летнюю тётку. В армянском есть выражение "побывал взрослым и снова стал ребенком" в том смысле, что ребенок смышленный не по годам и ведет себя или разговаривает как настоящий взрослый человек. В данном случае имеется в виду, что ребенок очень сознательный, всё понимает, и его развод с женой наверняка ее травмирует. |

The usual construction is eg "three going on four", "21 going on 22" etc -- meaning "three but nearly four", "21 but nearly 22" respectively -- but the man's probably changed it for comic effect, to suggest that his son is only three but talks/behaves/thinks like an adult, as Lonely Knight and Amor have said. 'The world hasn't had its way with him yet' = 'He's got a long life ahead of him'. To 'potter around the garden' is a UK English term meaning to walk around/work in one's garden, usually in a relaxed way -- so it's often used by elderly people. Apparently the US equivalent is 'to putter around'. |
