Что может означать буква N? С - это контрольная группа, Е - экспериментальная. Под N описывается весь состав участников эксперимента

I don't think PALS will mean 'Patient Advice......' here. Patient Advice and Liaison Services are bodies installed in UK National Health Service (NHS) hospitals to advise patients as to their rights and how/where to get the best treatment from the NHS. Often they're manned by volunteers.

However, this paragraph refers to classes, schools and a "PALS curriculum", so PALS here is more likely to be a school-/education-related term than a hospital-related one.

.... or the 'P' may possibly stand for 'Parent'/'Parental', given the context. Unfortunately 'PALS' is widely used as an abbreviation for lots of different phrases, depending on the scenario/context.
