If so, the reference no after 'Our ref: ______' in some business letters shows the initials of the person dictating the letter before the '/', and the initials of his/her secretary/personal assistant/clerk after it, sometimes in lower-case letters.

So in the reference no 'JR/ct',

* 'JR' could be short for (say) 'James Rochester' -- the manager; and

* 'ct' could be short for (say) 'Catherine Thompson' -- his secretary.

However, this format isn't standardised and some businesses use quite different formats.
