Subject: Should names of tribes be used with the definite article? Добрый день!Как Вы думаете, должны ли имена племен употребляться с определенным артиклем? Встречается the ulichi но tivertsi. Спасибо! |

Спасибо! Хотя не понимаю, почему the Ukraine. Во времена существования государства СССР (кстати, по-английски the USSR либо the Soviet Union) при употреблении в речи названия одной из республик - Украины - англичане использовали артикль the (то есть правильным вариантом считался the Ukraine). С обретением республикой независимости артикль перед этим именем собственным НЕ УПОТРЕБЛЯЕТСЯ. |

the correct way to say it is the Ukraine, but the asker wanted tribes, not nations. anyhow, it is the Apachis, the whoever... if it is a people, you use "THE" |

the ulichi the tivertsi the iriquois the slavs the goths the normans the, the, the, the anything else really is a grammatical error or just plain laziness |
