говоря о сезонном явлении?rivers fill up with water (?) |
м.б rivers flood или get flooded by water смотря как напоняются |
rivers swell (or become swollen) with water |

fill up with water +1 become swollen with water +1 |
Oh, cool, my variant is correct. |
"swollen with water" sounds much better and romantic. "fill up " is more technical, like somebody pours buckets of water onto the river to fill it up. River is not a pool or a bathtub. |
А это - romantic тоже? "A swollen river or stream contains more water than normal as a result of heavy rain or snow that has melted" |
the streams the brooks the burns are pregnant with thaw's tears the excrement of winter washes down the sodden hills it fills up channels wide and muddy all the way to Essex plains quite like an anorexic cow is gobbling up her pills or excommunicated padre dreaming of the rears of all those choristers and canes - it passes glistening unnerved uncensored uninterested knowing neither hurts nor fears no pains :) |
"swollen with water" sounds much better and romantic. "fill up " is more technical, like somebody pours buckets of water onto the river to fill it up. River is not a pool or a bathtub. Ahem.. Whose woods these are I think I know. My little horse must think it queer He gives his harness bells a shake The woods are lovely, dark and deep, I mean, how can you possibly get any more romantic?..))) |
PS: Why embarrass yourself philosophizing about a topic one is so patently ignorant about?.. Just thinking out loud ;-) |
Было бы странно, если бы он написал "woods swollen up with snow".
;-) Было бы странно, если бы он написал "woods swollen up with snow". And when did I ever claim to be "знаток поэзии"?.. All I said was that "fill up" is a perfectly acceptable ("romantic", if you will) option here and gave you an excellent example (a piece of poetry by a renounced (English-speaking, mind you!) poet)) to prove my point. There's absolutely no need for ''еще примеры''. Incidentally, (now you really got me going!) what would you say if a janitor or a cleaning person (or whatever you call those poor buggers at your hospital) barged into your X-ray room and started fiddling with the equipment?.. You wouldn't be very happy about that, would you? Because that's exactly how it feels when people like you (meaning amateurs with very basic English but lots of attitude) come to this forum and |
*what exactly is wrong with this option |
*renowned, not "renounced" I guess my fingers are quicker than my thoughts |
'to watch his woods swell up with snow' would be a good line if it wasn't for the s-s conflict but could work well enough in an aria, I suppose )) |
