Subject: small head, big ideas gen. Добрый вечер!увидела в рус-англ онлайн словаре это выражение как перевод пословицы "мал золотник, да дорог" но в гугл ни одной ссылки с подобной фразой не нашлось, получается, так не говорят? PS видела также Best (good) things come in small packages - оно будет более понятно для носителя? |
имхо, второй вариант ближе к теме |

Спасибо вам за ответ! вообще с этими идиомами всегда путаница для не-нэйтива |
в некоторых случаях подойдет выражение "a little goes a long way" и его модификации |

You haven't given any context, but ' I've never heard of 'Small head, big ideas'. |
Уважаемый johnstephenson, я полагал, что для доказательства существования такой пословицы Оксфордский словарь - достаточно авторитетный источник. Но да, Вы правы, примера употребления там нет, и вообще трудно найти контекст где бы то ни было. Hi, I.Havkin. I saw your links, inc the Oxford (USA) one -- but 95% of those proverbs, I've never heard of; some of them seem to go back to the 18th century. 'Small heads, big ideas' may have been used by someone famous in the US at some stage in the past -- but whether it ever became popular, and whether it's still in common use there today, I've no idea. A native US English-speaker may know better than me. Also I'm not sure what it means; is it that children can have big ambitions??? If this is also what the Russian proverb means and it's being used in (say) the headline to an article, then it may not matter if a proverb isn't used in the English, because 'Small heads, big ideas' could make an excellent headline. It all depends on the context.... Asker: Are you actually translating something, or are you just asking out of interest? If you're translating something, please tell us the exact context and whereabouts in the text the Ru proverb appears. |
O.K., johnstephenson. Thanks for your detailed comments. I accept your conclusion stating that the proverbs in question are mainly of extremely rare usage, as being a native English speaker, you can judge much better than I. |

в английском языке у слова small нет такого шлейфа коннотаций (особенно исторических или уничижительных и негативных). small people по-английски звучит почти гордо))) Мать Тереза: "We can do no great things - only small things with great love." |
