To be of value, valves must be attached to a piping system. How that attachment occurs has changed over time. For decades, screwed or flanged connections were the only way to go. However, the perfection of fusion welding techniques in the 1930s led the way for new methods of joining piping components, including valves. These new ways are the butt-weld (BWE) (Figure 1) and socket-weld (SW) (Figure 2) end connections.
Contacting and bearing areas can be weld-overlayed.
How does welding differ from weld overlay?
Instead of general welding which is joining two pieces of material together, weld overlay applies a corrosive resistant or hard facing layer onto the parent material.
In order to guarantee serviceable connections and to enhance wear-resistance of valve and fitting parts.
Where can weld overlay be applied?
Weld overlay can be applied to many components ranging from pipes, fittings, valves and vessels and is most commonly used within the oil and gas industry.
