Subject: herein gen. Добрый день! Подскажите, пожалуйста, насколько уместно при переводе технических условий с русского на английский использовать слово "herein"? Несколько раз в очень груженых фразах встречается "В соответствии с требованиями настоящих технических условий", очень хочется как-то это сжать. Можно ли перевести это как "In compliance with the requirements herein" или это совсем неуместно в техническом документе?
|
Хочется сказать in compliance with the requirements contained herein. |
Julia Lesana, Вы пишете "in compliance with" - соответственно, будет in compliance hereWITH", а не hereof. Чтобы не путаться и не заморачиваться, проще писать "in compliance/accordance with these requirements/specifications", имхо. Слово "настоящий" означает не просто документ, о котором идет речь, а именно тот документ, который вы переводите. В этом отличие "настоящий" от "данный". |
Кому как. Вот тост, я не сомневаюсь, даже в новогодние поздравительные открытки вставляет юридические термины. А по мне, в технической литературе herein делать нечего. |
according to the requirements of the present technical specifications |

какой нафик present. просто these. |
Можно нафиг и зис написать. Но в оригинале ведь не "эти", а "настоящие". коллеги-переводчики меня учили не заниматься самостоятельностью, а шагать по строгой линии. |

'Herein' is very formal and used mainly in contracts, other legal documents, formal business letters and other formal documents, so I'd have thought it would normally be OK for a ТУ-type document as long as you use it correctly. However, from a style point of view I would avoid using it in every sentence, and instead use alternatives from time to time, such as 'in these Specifications', 'described in this section' etc. It all depends on how formal a style the original is written in. It's part of a 'family' of similar words including 'herewith', 'hereunto' etc, which are no longer used in everyday English, but are still common in more formal documents. It's also used in a few set expressions such as 'herein lies the problem', as in: |
these и есть "настоящие". То есть, те, которые читающий держит в руках (а переводчик переводил). "Рresent" действительно встречается в аутентичных англ. документах, но в неаутентичных встречается еще чаще, поэтому многие переводчики его не любят. :) Я бы сказал, что это какой-то пережиток. |
А если в предложении "В соответствии с требованиями настоящих технических условий" имеется в виду не "держать в руках", а самое последнее, исправленное-переправленное-отредактированное издание? Нынешних, в смысле. |

johnstephenson, thank you for a different point of view. I've googled this expression and it appeared to me that I could indeed use this formal word in such context. Now you've made it clearer |

I would avoid using 'present' (and 'current') for 'настоящий' where it just means 'this/these', as both of them can also mean 'existing now/in force now' -- as in 'the present economic situation' and 'the present law dates from 1827'. It's often better to just use 'this/these'. |
Джон, объясните мне, пожалуйста, что такое ТУ-type document. |

Yes, it's a Cyrillic ТУ! |
johnstephenson, thank you for sharing and passing on your knowledge of linguistic and cultural peculiarities of using English. It's always a pleasure to come across your comments here. |

Jannywolf, peculiarities = чудачества. |
Liquid_Sun, так однозначно и исключительно?.. |

С учетом вашего Using the On an average term which refers to indexing of summarized... в соседней ветке (это из последних шедевров) Не рановато ли вам рассуждать о peculiarities, LS? ;-D |

'аракин инглиш' no comprende, I'm afraid. |
John, the Arakin Book was and (sometimes still is) the seminal coursebook for students of English at language-specializing universities/or "institutes" as they were known across the former USSR. As you may see, it wasn't writen by a native speaker. :) It mhad several parts? for every year of study, as far as I know. https://vk.com/doc77569995_134588668?hash=c00db588163c3b8ab6&dl=b042bd2498f4917b63 |
I am sorry about the misprints. I wanted so much to explain to you this part of Soviet university curriculum. |
>> 'аракин инглиш' no comprende, I'm afraid. If you are referring to Jannywolf's comment, it's actually quite easy to compender :-D All it takes is a bit of imagination coupled with some basic editing skills: |

Linch: Don't worry, your English is very good. Arakin: interesting. I've never seen that before, so have just scanned it. The phonetics seem quite thorough. His English phrases aren't perfect -- but they're very close (9.5/10). One or two of his spoken phrases are a bit worrying, though -- such as "This is my cock". I wouldn't have used that example myself, as in the UK 'cock' is slang for 'penis'.... Oops! |

johnstephenson, at our university, we were made to memorize some texts from Arakin (like, all the words)!! Some old teaching methods are just crazy( |

Jannywolf: You're welcome. It's quite easy for me to explain aspects of English, simply because I've being amongst English-speakers for 58 years -- just as, if it were a UK/US-based website with mainly UK/US users and the roles were reversed, you'd probably find it quite easy to explain the nuances/peculiarities of Russian. |
Thanks, John. |
