'covering' here is a verb rather than a noun and there are two commas missing. It should read 'If you have to, drop it in high, covering ....' * 'drop it in' =(here) slang for 'fire the lead/bullet/round into it'. The phrase doesn't make sense as it is -- but, presumably, that's because the bird suddenly appears, at which point the son fires the gun, interrupting his father (' .... '). So the sentence isn't completed. 'To cover an area' with your gun/rifle means 'to point your gun/rifle towards a particular area in front of you, ready to shoot at anyone/anything in the area that moves or poses a threat to you'. |
