- It is a comforting thought that theatre audiences are on the rise despite the recession. |

The sentence looks okay to this non-native speaker of English. |

Googling the phrase it is a comforting thought has produced 32,800 results. There is related stuff written by authors like Lawrence E. Johnson, Henrietta Norton, Susan Drummond, etc. While googling "it is a comfortable thought" elicits 8,660 results. Go figure. |

It's easy to figure - there's a slight difference in meaning. "Comfortable thought" describes the nature of the thought itself, while "comforting thought" describes that thought's effect upon somebody. |
http://the-difference-between.com/comfortable/comforting Although I must admit that checking "it is a comfortable thought" also turns up things written by native speaker authors like Rudyard Kipling, Nathaniel Hawthorne, etc. Let's wait for a native speaker to give us a hand here. |
Сколько угодно. comforting words - About 178,000,000 results (0.39 seconds) |
Мне кажется, вполне возможно, что "it is a comforting thought that" означает "радует то, что ...", тогда как "it is a comfortable thought that" значит "легко поверить в то, что/легко принять за чистую монету то, что". Not sure. |

There's little I need say, as 90% of the answer has already been given very expertly by CopperKettle and Tamerlane. If they're not native/very-near-native speakers of English, then I'm a banana.... You wouldn't normally refer to a 'comfortable thought' though, at least in the UK, even though it seems to appear on the web for some reason. It's a 'comforting thought'. A 'comfortable sofa' or a 'comfortable [ie, easy] win' by a football team -- yes. 'To comfort (someone)' has a special meaning of 'to make someone feel (slightly) happier/(slightly) less depressed/(slightly) less upset in the face of bad/depressing news, or when they're in a difficult situation'. So you could say that someone's wife has just been killed, but it was comforting for the husband to know that she died quickly. Or that someone has debts of £100,000, but it's comforting for them to know that some of those debts will be written off. 'Comfortable thought' may have been used in the distant past by Kipling and others as Tamerlane suggests, and that may explain the large number of occurrences of it on the web, but I've never heard it used in that way now. And homicide = murder of a house? I don't think so! |
imho in modern language, "a comfortable thought" is a thought (or a way of thinking) that is easy to accept / tolerate / get used to / work into one's system |
e.g. that more than a billion people live in hunger today would not be a comfortable thought for many |

wow2 -- I've done some research into this. 'Comfortable thought' is indeed used, as you/CopperKettle/Tamerlane say, possibly with one or several of the meanings you've suggested. If you check its use against UK/US media websites to see how often it appears, you'll find that it's not used a great deal, though: 'comfortable thought': Telegraph - 5 By comparison the figures for 'comforting thought' are: Telegraph - 437 So it is used, and is a legitimate term, even though I hadn't heard of it. As for the meaning(s), I'll leave others to work that out! |
