Без контекста: enhanced/greater/increased/better/contemporary/current understanding/awareness/knowledge и проч. "более" может не относится к "современное":) |

There's nothing wrong with 'more modern' in English, just as there's nothing wrong with 'more recent'. You can put 'deeper and modern' in English if you want to, and people will understand it perfectly well but, from a purely stylistic point of view, if you've got 'deepER' (a comparative) it reads slightly better in English if the 'modern' after it is also made into a comparative. That's the only reason I've put 'more modern' rather than just 'modern', which in this example sounds slightly abrupt. |
| No I blame the Russian version. It is not clear is "современное понимание" a new look to something that has been around for a long time, or it means an application of something old to a new reality. Because of that English "modern understanding" also doesn't sound certain enough. |

Себастьян: If you mean books such as 'Современный курс русского языка' which has been given the English title 'Comprehensive Course of Russian', that doesn't strike me as an accurate translation either, but rather a roughly-similar English title that someone's assigned to it. Lots of books (and films, and songs) aimed at foreign markets are given titles in the target language which aren't a translation of the original title; instead they're titles which are chosen because they sound 'right' in the target market. So that in itself doesn't convince me that 'современный' here means 'comprehensive'. |
