Subject: OFF a bit a whole lot gen. Привет! Сегодня где-то услышал словосочетание "a bit a whole lot", типа как в примере ниже:I’m hoping it’ll be a bit a whole lot of fun as well as a meeting point for art lovers and makers, and a spark for discussion about the arts. http://weloveperth.net.au/the-creative-curator-karys-mcewen/ Это склонность англичан преуменьшать (сам пример правда австралийский)? |

обычный оксюморон, особенность всех народов мира ))) |
Напомнило "a bit too much" (не просто "too much", а именно "a bit too much" - тоже своего рода преуменьшение) - но это словосочетание довольно привычное. http://www.usingenglish.com/forum/threads/105914-about-quot-a-bit-too-much-quot |

I've never heard of it before. It could be an 'Ozzyism', although if you google it you'll find that only five websites ending in .au include the phrase, one of them being your link at 12:05. This is why we transported so many of these people to Australia in the 18th-19th centuries -- their Inglish just wasn't up to standard.... 'A bit too much' is OK though: 'a bit too much' --> 'too much' --> 'far too much' |
'Ozzyism' could have a speacial meaning on MT:) (кто в теме, тот поймёт) |
///their Inglish just wasn't up to standard/// Inglish is is not for ivryone |

Rami88: What's the special meaning, then? Believing in the teachings of Ozzy Osbourne? Amor 71: Perhaps that should have read: 'Their Inglish wozn't up to standard'! |
nope:) here on MT, we have our very own 'Ozzy':) if you look up 'Оз' here on Поиск по форуму, you'll get loads of threads which will explain the idea... |

I see -- Аркадий. Even more famous than Mr Osbourne. I won't ask where the Oz_maLL comes from though. |
"Аркадий" is [probably] not his real name either; he's been labelled that way by another forum visitor |

I see. These nicknames are a nightmare -- you never know who you're dealing with unless they include a past tense/adjectival ending in their posting. English is even worse, of course. |

So he's named himself after a shopping mall? In that case, from now on I wish to be known as gloucestercentralshoppingarcade. |
aren't there better places to name yourself after? ;) |
