Subject: Грамматика gen. Уважаемые знатоки! Скажите, пожалуйста, как правильно:The police are responsible for these actions или The police is responsible for these actions Bill was taken to the hospital или Bill was taken to hospital Заранее благодарю! |
The police is responsible/ to the hospital-hope so... |
1) The police are responsible for these actions. In English, we use a plural verb with police: e.g. The police are investigating the murder, but haven't arrested anyone yet. http://www.englishforums.com/English/ThePoliceIsAre/jjglp/post.htm 2) Bill was taken to hospital. (We don't need to know which one). |
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Police_is_or_police_are Use the third person, plural form 'are' when referring to police in general. The word police is an aggregate noun, a word representing an indefinite number of parts; aggregate nouns have no singular form. The police are blocking off the street where the accident occurred. |

The police are... to hospital. to the hospital можно, когда вы не являетесь пациентом, а, например, работаете там или навестить пришли. По Мерфи что-то такое помнится. |

если нет определенной больницы, то артикль наверно надо ставить (больница - исчисляемое существительное). или я прогулял какой то урок в школе? =)) |
В целом, я бы добавил, на мой взгляд, если полиция как единая сила, как институт, то police is, а если полицейские - то are. |
take somebody to hospital - устойчивая такая фраза |
Bill was taken to (the) hospital. По ситуации. Возможно, его сопровождали, тогда и госпиталь известен. |
I usually refer to the police as plural, i.e. "the police are". As Kenneth's example, I would say something like "the police system" or "the police force". I think 'police' needs another word to make it definitely singular. I am not 100% sure, but to me, "the police is" sounds a bit awkward. (by iolanthe, Leeds, UK) http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=242586&langid=18 |
Ну если Бил заболел и его увезли в больницу - was taken to hospital. |
Tamerlane, ну например The Police is responsible for upholding the law, and ensuring that people behave |
Много примеров можно найти у нэйтивов. Думаю, разница is/are примерно как я описал. |
Да, согласен с Вами. В некоторых случаях singular допустимо. |
Возможно, где-то это описано в грамматике? |
Strictly speaking, 'police' is singular, so the text book was correct. But in speech, it depends on what is in our minds at the time. If we're talking about the police as an institution, then probably we'd use the singular. So "The police is part of society". But if, as in your example, we can imagine individual police officers standing by the roadside, then perhaps we'd be more inclined to use the plural. Предположу, что возможно в любом случае are все равно более употребимо. |

Кто о чем, а я о своем) Murphy Raymond. English Grammar in Use. 3rd edition |
snusmumric, не томите, дайте выжимку :-) |
А мне ухо режет "police are", хотя почти всегда именно так говорят и пишут грамотные люди. |
Мне is режет) |
Вопрос- насколько это принципиально? Речь идет об экзамене... |
|

trtrtr, не дам, текст там сканированный, лень всё делать:) Борена, если речь об экзамене, следуйте Мерфи, обычно на него ориентируются, это я Вам как бывший препод говорю) |
snusmumric, ок) |
///насколько это принципиально?/// принципиально |
snusmumric, а что он пишет по этому поводу? |

Скачала отсюда http://narod.ru/disk/1276451000/eng010_1.zip.html про hospital как я уже объяснила, про police как в wikianswers примерно |
I got it. Jack had an accident last week. He was taken to hospital. He's still http://bookz.ru/authors/raimond-merfi/murphyrmnd01/page-16-murphyrmnd01.html |
and here: We always use a plural verb with police: http://bookz.ru/authors/raimond-merfi/murphyrmnd01/page-17-murphyrmnd01.html |
|

а по поводу артикля - это только с больницей так устоялось без неопределенного? или список шире? |
Кстати, в этих примерах можно перевести именно как "полицейские" |
ayk_aleksanyan, например, go to church |
go to dinner наверное можно вспомнить |
|
link 12.07.2013 13:37 |
ayk_aleksanyan, не только, school, church и т.д. Например, как ученик Вы go to school, at school, а как родитель - go to the school, на собрание, например. |

точно, вот черч знал. =))) |

спасибо. вы мне напомнили. Получается из той же серии. |

trtrtr, так это уже перевод, от него не зависит употребление мн/ед числа в языке оригинала. |
snusmumric, я думаю косвенно это связано. Вот, кстати, о полиции как об организации: Although the police is a hierarchical organisation, chief constables do not issue orders to be followed to the letter by other officers. http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201314/cmselect/cmhaff/67/6704.htm |

trtrtr, а если перевод с английского не на русский, а на другой язык, в котором свои правила?) связь, конечно, можно найти, но на перевод лучше не ориентироваться, имхо. а исключения можно найти всегда. я обычно говорила своим студентам что-то вроде "police всегда употребляется с глаголом мн. числа. Нет, ну не всегда, конечно, но для вас - всегда!" (и так по многим правилам, запомнят основные, с исключениями разберутся) |

Quite so "The county police are utterly at fault," said he, The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans |
snusmumric, я понимаю о чем вы, но я о конкретном случае. Не могу влезть в голову к англичанину, но думаю когда он говорит police are он как бы представляет себе полицейских, а когда хоть и редко говорит police is - обобщенно институт, структуру, организацию. Ну, на мой взгляд так. |
I may arguably be wrong) |
интересно, вот только я смеюсь с этой ветки и этих пиривоччегов (бог с ним, с аскером... аскеры бывают разные... ) ??? |
Вот какой ответ я получил: "Police are". Police is a plural, so a plural verb. Now you say why did I say "Police is" and not Police are a plural. That is because I am referring to the single word - police and not police as a noun. Yes, I agree, languages are difficult. Bill was taken to the hospital. That is the way it is often said but is not really correct. By saying "the hospital" you imply that there is only ONE hospital anywhere which is untrue. Usually there are many hospitals around. The truly correct way is to say: "Bill was taken to a hospital." Even English speakers are often incorrect in their language. |
Engl2013, с кем вы там общаетесь, не спрашивайте у него больше ничего по грамматике, потому как, судя по второму абзацу, он как раз из тех самых English speakers, которые are often incorrect in their language. |

segu, не надо придираться. Человек очень даже внятно объяснил. |

Ух и развели же на две страницы! Всем известно, что есть правила, а не некоторые случаи. |
не надо придираться. Человек очень даже внятно объяснил. Он-то объяснил, да только, как говорится, есть нюанс :). Аскер навряд ли в школе АмЕ изучает :) A few 'institutional' nouns take no definite article when a certain role is implied: for example, at sea (as a sailor), in prison (as a convict), and at/in college (for students). Among this group, BrE has in hospital (as a patient) and at university (as a student), where AmE requires in the hospital and at the university (though AmE does allow in college and in school). When the implied roles of patient or student do not apply, the definite article is used in both dialects. |
