6.6 Hydrostatic And Earth Pressure Load

Vertical uplift load (buoyancy), and lateral load due to the difference in static head between ground water level outside and level of fluid inside the structure shall be considered in order to determine stability (uplift and overturning) of, and design forces in foundations and substructures. Elevation of the highest ground water level, including its seasonal variations, to be used for design shall be established from the soils report. Retaining walls having different earth levels on two sides shall be designed for the following lateral earth pressures: Active pressure shall be used for cantilever type walls which are free to rotate or displace at top. Coefficient of active pressure or equivalent fluid pressure shall be established from the soils report. At-rest pressure shall be used for walls which are not free to rotate or displace at top, e.g., sump structure with cover integral with the walls. Coefficient of at-rest pressure or equivalent fluid pressure shall be established from the soils report. Liquid retaining walls shall be designed assuming the liquid level to be level with the top of the wall with zero freeboard.
