From an experimental point of view, one of the findings from the study is that it is extremely difficult to obtain sufficiently fast response from pore pressure transducers to obtain an accurate picture of what happens during cone penetration in clay, and immediately after halting penetration. As the design of the cones improved (from cone 1 to cone 3), and as experience in methods of de-airing improved, the transducer response also improved. The de-airing technique consisted of placing an air-tight sleeve around the cone, and cycling the water pressure in the sleeve between +100 kPa. A cased borehole was augured to the water table, and this hole was filled with water. The sleeve was removed from the cone only after the cone had been immersed in the water of the borehole. When cone penetration was halted, the time taken for the pore pressure readings to reach a peak was taken as a measure of the response.
