Roderick Beaton has written that the story of the Greek language question ‘tends to be told piecemeal and there is no single, authoritative history of the debate from the late eighteenth century to the late twentieth’ I cannot claim that my book is that single, authoritative history, but Beaton’s statement has been both a challenge and an incentive to me.
