Subject: table a motion Hello! Could you please help me translate a phrase "table a motion". It is taken from Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (a parliamentary term). Thanks in advance!

In standard British/Canadian parliamentary terminology 'table' means to put a motion forward for discussion (внести предложение). However, in American English (which I believe applies to "Robert's Rules of Order" it has exactly the opposite meaning, namely, to postpone consideration of a motion for a future date (отложить предложение на будущее время). |

I'd go with the British one. But since you're stuck because of the cultural linguistic difference, why not (1) find out for sure if Robert's Rules of ... are in fact written to apply to Canadian, American or UK rules? Google it. (2)To be doubly sure, why not ask an American person about the expression (via ICQ - you could search for a person with an interest in Political Science there, if you're desperate enough:)-I have done that once with a term in a certain field, it did take about 30 minutes but I did get the answer). |

Dear Answerers, Thank you so much for your replies! But I am a bit confused now, esp. because as Ваня В. said in American English "table" has a different meaning. This Roberts Rules applies to American English for USA. Could you please advise me where I can look up this term in Internet with specific reference to Roberts Rules of Order? Have there been Russian translations of the New Edition of the rules? I am struggling whether I should invent a new wheel and translate it, or whether there are perhaps standard translations available. I would APPRECIATE your help very much! Thank you once again! |

You are no longer looking for the translation, it seems, so you'll just have to google specific sites with reference to the term and the author of the book - well, I think your best bet is to look for political forums/chatrooms/boards etc. I ain't gonna do that for you, sorry :) but somebody else might, although, personally, I think it's your job really :) |
