Внутренний контекст embraces the former experience of the speaker, which is coded in his consciousness and nervous system. Внешний контекст – physical surrounding and other information which is present implicitly in the communicative interaction including the character of interpersonal interrelations of the speakers and.....
Within such a framework one can distinguish between two kinds of context: An extrinsic context and anintrinsic context. The extrinsic context can be situational or linguistic. The situational context refers tothe common ground that a speaker and a listener share physically; the things they can see, hear ortouch. The linguistic context refers to the common ground created on the basis of the speaker's andthe listener's previous linguistic communication; what has been said or what can be inferred on thebasis of what has been said.In addition to the situational and linguistic context a speaker and a listener may have commonexperiences or culturally shared knowledge. This common knowledge can be conceptualized as anintrinsic context, again to the extent that this is common knowledge necessary for the listener tounderstand a linguistic input. The intrinsic context depends on the listener's background knowledge, the knowledge stored in memory representations often referred to as scripts, schemata, mental models, etc. (Gentner & Stevens, 1983; Johnson-Laird, 1983; Rumelhart & Ortony, 1977; Scha~nk & Abelson,1977).
In some recent developments of semantic theory, in particular certain versions of dynamic semantics, ‘internal’ contexts, that is, contexts defined in terms of the interlocutors’ pragmatic presuppositions or the information accumulated in the discourse have come to play a central role, replacing the notion of propositional content in favor of a notion of context change potential as the meaning of sentences. I will argue that there are a number of fundamental problems with this conception of sentence meaning and outline a way of dealing with the ‘dynamic phenomena’ from the perspective of the traditional distinctions between propositional content and (internal) context as well between propositional content and illocutionary force, using structured propositions and minimal discourse-driven internal context. Notions of context play an important role in the semantics of natural language: many expressions require for their semantic evaluation taking into account circumstances of the utterance situation, the semantic evaluation of other expressions in the same or in previous sentences, or background assumptions shared by the interlocutors. Two kinds of contexts can be roughly distinguished that play an important role in recent semantic theory: external and internal context (as I call them). External notions of context include utterance contexts and indices (sequences of coordinates that can be shifted in the presence of an intensional operator).
