proof of relationship document

"proof of kinship", although no such wording really exists, at least in the US. normally you'd be asked for a birth certificate or marriage certificate, both of which would prove the familial connection.

i would suggest: "birth/marriage certificate"

silly.wizard - "proof of relationship document" sounds awkward and not definitive. for example, employer/employee is also a relationship, and an employee contract is proof of that relationship.

называется это proof of family relationship.
kath: "birth/marriage certificate", as well as documentation showing joint ownership or property; or a lease showing joint tenancy of a common residence; or documentation showing co-mingling of financial resources, or parental test results (biological parent-child relationship), etc..

Yippie, but in Russian 'документ, подтверждающмй наличие родства' asks for proof of family (blood) connection. Property and bank accounts - are a legal/financial connection. As for biological parental tests - those come into play when parental connections are in question and parents try to establish it by legal means.

Perhaps "proof of family relationship" is better because it is more inclusive, but I still say that наличие родства is covered by 'birth/marriage certificate' under all regular circumstances.

kath, 'birth/marriage certificate' does not cover "common law marriage"

silly.wizard - most states don't recognize 'common law' marriage, so again, an exception. but okay, i concede ;))

// most states don't recognize 'common law' marriage, so again, an exception. //

kath, i am not a lawyer and apparently neither are you ;) so let's agree to not argue over these matters: our argument will not yield truth - instead, we would end up producing tons of laughable material.

to illustrate:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common-law_marriage
A common-law marriage can still be contracted in the District of Columbia and nine states: .... All states, however, recognize a common-law marriage that was validly contracted in another state under the principles of comity and their choice/conflict of laws rules.

i'm not a lawyer, that's true. 9 states plus DC, i know!

anyway, i did concede :))

а common-law marriage в России разве считается родством?
