думаю, здесь имеется в виду не просто ссылка, а ссылка с идентификатором отправившего, так часто поощряется продвижение какого-нибудь сайта или услуги среди знакомых. Если получатель ссылки воспользуется ей, отправитель будет как-то поощрен продвигаемым сайтом.
