Subject: job patterns AmE Всем привет!посоветуйте, как бы понаряднее перевести должности, e.g. начальник отдела маркетинга, начальник департамента инфраструктуры etc. What sounds better: chief of marketing dept. or marketing dept.chief? уместно ли инфраструктуру обзывать infrastructure? и перевод "специалист" и "управляющий делами"... Заранее Всем Thanx |

| Если на западный вариант, то лучше: Marketing Director/Manager. Если нужно оставить наш «колор локал», то как Тимурыч. |

Тимурыч, а по-моему asset manager - эт как раз управляющий делами, а вот что с инфраструктурой делать, уж оч она меня смущает:( И опять таки, "начальник международного отдела" - international dept.chief? How else? Pleeeeeease |

да ладно вам, я сама скромность вижу в сети 21 - 24 из 24 для "Facilities and Assets Manager", все практически из Австралии, по описанию смахивают на завхозов. да мне что, лишь бы Reginka-Aspirinka подошло |

I would avoid using the "Head of...." consruct, at least when you are translating for Americans. I don't think it is a big mistake, but it seems like in European English the expression is more welcomed than on this side of the pond. On more than one occasion I heard people laugh at Russian business cards listing someone's title as e.g. "Head of Priduction Department." (Is she a person or is he just a head?) Bottom line, the term is not widely used in the U.S. Think of something with "manager" or "supervisor" or "director" in it. |

2 toast1 and lisulya: Admittedly, this is a thing of personal preference. And it is true that in news media you can often see "Head of Production" and the like. However, it is my personal experience that the term is rarely used on business cards in the U.S. It is one thing to say that someone is Head of Production because you don't know that person's exact title (as often happens in newspaper articles), and it is a different thing to put that on a business card. As far as hanging with the rong crowd: I am not talking about sexual references here at all. To me, saying that someone is "Head of production" is similar to answering the phone by saying "Mr. Johnson's Desk, how can I help you." (I have heard secretaries actually answer like that.) Well, you are not a desk, I want to say, and neither is someone a head of anything. Again, I agree this may be a matter of preference. And if yours is to use the term, that does not make your translation any inferior. |
