"Carl’s Cars is a magazine about people.” That’s the mantra of this quirky, beautiful and idiosyncratic quarterly produced in Oslo, in English, for a global readership.

“We try to present cars with a human touch,” says editor-in-chief Karl Eirik Haug, “because I believe the way people interact with them is interesting.” Haug, a journalist with a lifelong passion for cars – and car brochures, which he collects by the kilo – launched the magazine in 2001. And, naturally, Volvos feature regularly in its glossy pages. “Old ones are beautiful,” he rhapsodises, “and new ones are exciting. The cars have a very modern image now, something fresh. My favourite is the C30 [which stars in the Winter 2006 issue]. It’s so different to what Volvo have done before, and also to the competition.

Karl the editor is not to be confused with the fictional Carl of the magazine’s title. “Carl with a ‘C’ is our real boss,” says Karl with a ‘K’, making LIV’s head spin slightly. “He’s a used car dealer who loves talking to people, and the magazine is always produced with him in mind.” And what does Carl drive? “Well, it used to be a big American gas-guzzler,” says Karl. “The bigger the better. But now I’m not so sure…”
