Background:

Some customers are confused by compatibility descriptions on Pioneer DVD-R media. The DVD-R format supports both single-session and multi-session recording methods.

The term, multi-border, refers to writing data in separate sessions to the same disc. This incremental writing method is similar to multi-session recording on CD-R media.

To play an incrementally written DVD-R disc, verify that your playback device accepts multi-border, recording media. At this time, many DVD players and drives from various manufacturers fail to recognize DVD-R multi-border recordings.

Technical Details:

The DVD-R format allows incremental writing, or the ability to sequentially add files during different recording sessions. Multi-border recording allows you to make incremental recordings and then play the disc on a compatible device. Some manufacturers have warnings on their hardware stating that the equipment only functions with DVD-R single-border media.

Playback devices marked with read - single border are limited to DVD-R single- recording-session material only. The DVD Forum specifications allow multi-border support to remain at the discretion of the hardware manufacturers.

For market compatibility, the Prassi program currently bundled with the Pioneer recording drives supports single-border recording only. However, other programs may support this feature. With alternate software, the Pioneer drives are capable of recording and playing multi-border media.

Both 3.95GB and 4.7GB DVD-R discs support single-border and multi-border recording.
