Subject: кто силен в грамматике???SOS!!! всем привет! помогите перевести предложение!!!мне сказали, что в необходимый Вам контракт должны быть еще внесены коррективы и изменения.(и только после этого мы сможем отправить Вам этот контракт) -ИНТЕРЕСУЕТ СОГЛАСОВАНИЕ ВРЕМЕН- ВСЕМ заранее спасибо!!! p.s.извините, что отвлекаю по пустякам. |

Поскольку автор фразы говорит о текущей ситуации, то надо использовать презент перфект I have been told that amendments and alterations are yet to be made to the Contract you are waiting for/have requested from us (only after their introduction we can send you the Contract) |

| Не, Ириша, так получается, что именно говорящий должен эти коррективы в контракт вносить, а на самом деле они ДОЛЖНЫ БЫТЬ внесены, то есть неизвестно, собссно, кем. |

| Нет, вы-таки заставили меня понервничать: 1. про Лену вспомнили спустя две недели. Между прочим, ее e-mail есть под ее ником; 2. V подкалывают, когда человека нет на форуме. Вот он появится, тогда, может, и поговорите, чтобы у него была возможность отреагировать, если он (вдруг!) сочтет это нужным. | Why told? There are other words like informed, advised to be used in this sentense unless you want to add some flavour. |

я про Рудут давно вспомнила, просто все спросить забывала... а писать ей... мне кажется это бы как спам прошло. Я то в оффах бываю, а рудут именно по поводу оффов и ругалась... а V хороший... просто действительно я его давно не видела... |

Ирина, а когда меня на формуме не было (в начале апреля) там, что-то писали, "Kintorov is back", кто-то плакал, кто-то радовался. Лично мне, как человеку очень уважающего самого себя, было противно это все читать. А V мне очень нравится, несмотря ни на что. |

| kintorov, a VERB is still needed. If you don't like "revisions need to be made" (in reported speech, I believe, it should be "i was informed that revisions needED to be made"), you can say "revisions ARE still to be made" (in reported speech, "I was informed that revisions WERE still to be made") |

TruthSeaker: Strictly speaking you are right. However, one can technically argue that we are not dealing with reported speach here, but rather talking about two actions: one, my being told, and, two, the contract needing revision. I know, it is hair splitting, but I was just trying to avoid using pres. perfect in the sentence where possible not to make the sentence "too wordy." By business writing professor in college used to say that using perfect tenses where a simple indefinite tense would do, is a crime. Consider also (against the advice of my professor :)) ): I have been told/informed that the contract still needs.... Here you are bringing the whole sentence into the present tense. |

I agree with your professor (please note that I did not use any of the perfect tenses in my post; my point was changing the present simple into the past simple in reported speech). However, as for your statement “one can technically argue that we are not dealing with reported speech here, but rather talking about two actions: one, my being told, and, two, the contract needing revision”, I can only say: even if we forgot about reported speech for now, we would be still left with two actions happening AT THE SAME TIME in the past. So, if the first one (I was told) is in the past simple, the second one (the contract needs revision) should be in the past simple as well – “the contract needed revision”. I am sorry, but I don’t understand your last comment “I have been told/informed that the contract still needs.... | Truth Seeker: You are right on target again; if you make the assumption that both actions occurred in the past. However, I thought that the contract still needs to be revised as of right now. I thought that the sentence is talking about someone being told previously that the contract needed to be revised, and the contract still needs to be revised. (должны быть **еще** внесены). That's why I was so lax with the tense of the second verb. Of course, if my assumption is incorrect, than the only way to say it would be to push both verbs into the past. |

I was told that before we could send the final version to you, the text (of the contract) needed to be (somewhat) revised and amended - но это только с точки зрения КЛАССИЧЕСКОЙ грамматики. А так, на практике, все спокойно скажут .. before we send you... needs to be..., и это будет воспринято совершенно правильно. ЗЫ Лично для коллеги, столь возлюбившего модальный глагол shall. |
