Subject: "kick the tires" I was reading an article and came across this phrase, but can't figure out what it means. There are lots of hits in the Internet but no definition unfortunately....Could you help me with this? Thanks to anyone for help:) |
| а контекст? вообще это из профессионального сленга торговцев подержанными автомобилями. Если клиент слоняется по салону и kicks the tires, пинает колеса, проверяя накачку, то, скорее всего, он ничего не купит - машины его не интересуют, он просто делает вид, что присматривается. В переносном смысле - делать умный вид, создавать видимость осмысленной деятельности, выдавать себя за эксперта. И т.д. Без контекста сложно что-то более определенное предложить. |

| nephew, u r right, that is exactly what it means idiomatically. just one little thing though. kicking the tires doesn't refer to a very thorough evaluation of a future buy. for ex, u can hear, when bying a computer, don't just kick the tires, check it's performance characteristics carefully. |
