Subject: tekkies и non-tekkies tech.

The term 'wearable technology' is in general rather loosely applied, and often as much to clothes that incorporate technology as to technology that is worn. It is however worth pursuing the distinction between these two categories as they represent different cultural origins, ambitions and interests - clothes incorporating technology seem to be the goal of a wide variety of interested parties, including conventional purveyors of fashion and clothing. However the interest in technology that is worn (that which we might most properly call wearable technology) has been closely associated with the evolution of computing, particularly personal computing. With the turn of the millennium, and the progress of technology, this once straightforward dichotomy between the 'non-tekkies' and the 'tekkies' has started to blur.

I've already posted about the derivation of "tekkie" or "techie" from the same Indo-European root that gives us both text and technology, and a host of other related words. I find the term "tekkie" somewhat offensive. I've certainly had it applied to me by academics who should know better; it is, I suppose, marginally better than the other term I often hear—"computer person." It is in part those attitudes that inspired me to describe myself as a digital medievalist.
